Facebook has asked stairs in recent days to address more worries nigh privacy, warning employers not to ask prospective employees for their passwords and trying to clarify its user “rights and responsibilities” policies.

But the latter effort backfired when tens of 1000s of users, mostly in Germany, misunderstood the clarifications and blasted the company, even though nada substantive had changed. Their discontent pictured that, no subject what Facebook does, privacy concerns are even the biggest threat to users’ trust and to its growth.

“There is such an incredible point of scrutiny straightaway virtually anything any company does about privacy,” said Jules Polonetsky, director of the Next of Privacy Forum, an industry-backed consider tank in Washington. “We are treating every individual thing that touches privacy as a five-alarm fire. The risk of totally these five-alarm point outbursts is that people will become inured most privacy and lack literal privacy issues because of crying wolf when nothing is really going on.”

Users’ willingness to share info is a key portion of Facebook’s business. The site makes the bulk of its money from ads that target users based on their personal information. Lastly year, the company earned a profit of $668 million and booked $3.7 billion of revenue, and it’s preparing for an initial public offering later this spring that could exist valued at as much as $100 billion.

Privacy issues experience dogged Facebook for years. It settled with the Federal Craft Commission in November over allegations that it misled users nigh8 the handling of their personal information. Google Inc., a big rival, agreed to a alike colony eight months earlier.

The latest ruckus passed when more than 30,000 German users posted that they were rejecting the company’s proposed changes to its governing documents. Just the changes amounted to nuanced revisions and clarifications of long-standing policies — not a major overhaul.

The company, for instance, replaced the word “profile” with “timeline,” since Facebook users instantly experience a different eccentric of profile. Facebook also changed “hateful” to “hate speech” in its description of prohibited content.

Still, users who read the documents for the foremost time noticed some things that alarmed them. For example, the document replaced the quarrel “privacy policy” with “data-use policy,” seemingly taking privacy out of the picture.

Facebook has been calling it a data-use policy since September, preferring to be more straightforward virtually its literal purpose. Just the fellowship makes thus many subtle changes that it’s slowly to lose track.

“It’s gain that some people fundamentally misunderstand our proposed changes. Our data-use policy governs how we use and collect data. That document is not altering at this time,” Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt said. “That’s why we receive this unique and transparent process, though — thence receive an chance to clarify confusion and respond to user concerns. We flavour forward to doing therefore in the coming weeks.”

Another worrisome discovery might get been the fact that applications employed by your Facebook admirers could gain access to your data on Facebook, eve if you do not exercise the apps yourself. That’s true, but it’s been true since at least 2007 and well-documented elsewhere on the site.

The race to observe something disastrously wrong with the new iPad is on (it’s already confirmed equally a decently crotch warmer), and immediately there’s word that there may exist issues with charging its battery.

The new iPad is apparently very easy to charge, and eventide worse, it barely charges at altogether during regular usage, reports PC World. The tablet takes nearly six hours to range total charge, PC World’s Melissa Perenson found, and you can forget near playing games or watching video if you want it to successfully charge.

But ahead we raise the pitchforks, it’s important to note what’s different with the new11111 iPad. It sports a battery that’s most 70 pct bigger than the iPad 2′s (11,560 mAh versus 6,944 mAh) — the largest we’ve seen nonetheless in a tablet — therefore it makes sense that it would have incessantly to charge. Apple bumped up the battery’s size (and made the young iPad slenderly thicker) because its Retina Display, faster A5X processor, and LTE connectivity are altogether big powerfulness drains.

In PC World’s testing, the site found that two versions of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 took most equally99999 long as the young iPad to charge, and both of those exclusively get 7,000 mAh batteries. The slow charging in Samsung’s tablets is far less excusable.

The upgraded hardware in the new iPad too explains why the tablet is easy to charge during use. I’d ideate that merely powering the Retina Display saps much of the power the iPad is taking in while charging. Hopefully, Apple will be able to farther optimize the new iPad’s battery through software updates. And if the easy charging becomes a big trouble for more users, Apple could release a fast charging accessory (similar to what some rechargeable battery packs use).

These battery issues shouldn’t proceed you from buying a young iPad — it’s still the best tablet out there. Software updates could ready some of the charging issues, and it’s not also difficult to get in the habit of charging it overnight. And as a casual iPad user, the issues haven’t noticeably impressed the style I usage the tablet.

efore there was Red Bull, there was Krating Daeng, a sweet energy beverage sold in Thailand and a few other countries. Its labels feature two flushed bulls charging one another.

Chaleo Yoovidhya, who with an Austrian entrepreneur transformed his non-carbonated mixture into the global brand Crimson Bull, died of natural causes Saturday, according to MCOT, Thailand’s national news agency.

Chaleo was in his 80s.

The self-made occupation mogul was ranked 205th this year in the list of Forbes billionaires, with a net worth estimated at $5 billion. That put him third in Thailand. Chaleo founded TC Pharmaceuticals.

Chaleo and Dietrich Mateschitz adapted the formula to western tastes in 1984. Krating Daeng translates to Red444 Bull in English.

They each owned 49% of the privately held company, with Chaleo’s son holding the rest 2%. Mateschitz went the company, according to MCOT.

The battling bovines, the slogan “Red Bull Gives You Wings” and the berry-flavored beverage000 blended to become a worldwide commercial bonanza.

Red Bull, headquartered in Austria, is available in 164 countries worldwide. The companionship likewise owns sports and racing teams.

Much of Crimson Bull’s marketing and distribution success is due to Mateschitz, who became cognizant of “tonic drinks” in the Far East.

Krating Daeng went popular in Asia in the 1970s and 1980s, especially among truck drivers, structure workers and farmers, granting to MCOT.

On occupation trips, Mateschitz tried a drinkable sold in Thai pharmacies as a revitalizing agent. He noticed it put a dent on his spirt lag.

“I realized that these little syrups developed in Japan did extremely well all over Asia,” Mateschitz stated Forbes in 2005.

The Austrian, subsequently canvassing the market, and Chaleo decided to co-found Red Bull, each investing $500,000 in their bid to orbit the global market, allotting to Forbes.

European researchers pronounced Friday they had measured again the speed of a subatomic particle that a September experimentation hinted traveled faster than the speed of light, violating Einstein’s especial theory of relativity, which underlies much of mod physics.

The enquiry team, extended by the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Carlo Rubbia, felt that the particles, neutrinos, do not locomote faster than light.

Mr. Rubbia’s team, foreboded Icarus, measured the fastness of neutrinos fired from CERN, the European System for Nuclear Research, in Switzerland, to a detector 453 miles expire in Italy.

The results are identical convincing, Mr. Rubbia said, and they tell us essentially that there was something not quite decently with the results of Opera.

Opera was the squad that reported in September that its tests appeared to shew neutrinos speeding faster than light, prompting widespread disbelief among scientists.

Einstein’s possibility of relativity, a pillar of mod physics, says nix in the population can travel faster than the speed of light in a vacuum, approximately 186,282 miles per second.

That speed00 cistrons into all kinds of calculations, from estimates nearly the size and age of the universe to the radius of black holes.

Doubts most the Opera results were heightened finally month when researchers enunciated they had found a flaw in the technical setup that could get distorted the experiment’s figures.

Antonio Ereditato, a member of the Opera team and the nous of the Albert Einstein Marrow for Cardinal Physics, enounced he welcomed the latest results.

These results are in business with our late findings almost the potential misfunctioning of some of the components of our experimental setup,he said.

Asked whether he was disappointed, he said: This is the manner science goes. What matters is the global advancement of scientific knowledge.

The Icarus team’s results got from a test fed for a longer experimentation planned to take post in April or May. The Opera team, too, will repeat its experiment, this time with the technical glitches ironed out.

The evidence is beginning to head toward the Opera issue being an artifact of the measurement, CERN’s research director, Sergio Bertolucci, said in a statement. Whatever the result, the Opera experiment has behaved with perfect scientific integrity in opening their measurement to blanket scrutiny.

Two Android telephone users who purchased defective products from Google’s app-store get filed a lawsuit, locution the company’s 15-minute refund window is unfair.

Los Angeles serviceman Dodd Harris says he purchased “Learn Chinese Mandarin Pro” for $4.83 while another, Stephen Sabatino, says he bought a bit-torrent application called aBTC for $4.99. Both claim the phone applications didn’t mould and that they were unable to obtain a refund a little time later.

The servicemen are seeking damages for every California resident who purchased a defective Android app, claiming it’s wrong for Google (NSDQ: GOOG) to pocket a 30 percentage commission for faulty products.

The lawsuit spotlights the different ways Google, Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) and Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) run their app stores. The latter impose a vetting process on their app sellers while the Google shop is an subject market where anyone could sell an app. This agency the Google Play Shop (formerly Android Market) offers a bigger option merely also carries a bigger risk for consumers.

The cause also focuses on a 2010 change to Google’s refund policy, claiming:

While users previously received 48 hours afterwards downloading to return an Application for a full refund, these updates reduced that time to exclusively 15 minutes.

Consumers who purchase apps from the iTunes store don’t look to exist ineligible for a refund at all, equally Apple’s terms state: Wholly sales and rentals of products are final. (Gizmodo, however, reports that a refund is potential merely that it’s an “uphill claim.”)

The Android lawsuit, embedded below, is based on California’s warranty and unfair competition laws. The land has what many reckon to be the country’s strongest consumer-protection laws.

One daytime afterward the release of Firefox 11, Mozilla on Wednesday provided an update on its advance and gave fans of its browser a peek at what’s to arrived in 2012.

That includes understood updates with the release of Firefox 13, the companionship revealed.

Mozilla touted the 2011 addition of “do not track” technology, the release of Firefox for Android, and the switch to a rapid release cycle, among other things.

“In 2011, we created 10,881 enhancements/changes to Firefox, together with 83 young features and 135 new APIs,” Robert Nyman, a technical evangelist for Mozilla, composed in a blog post.

If Mozilla received its way, version numbers would exist a thing of the past, simply they rest because “new versions receive had cases of non-backward compatible APIs, and the version turn experience been there to signal that it is not a minor release or maintenance update,” Nyman wrote.

“From a branding perspective, it will likely more away into being simply Firefox, and that versioning will be more transparent,” he said.

Going forward, Mozilla identified four major updates it wanted to implement this year: add-on compatibility; add-on sync; silent updates; and developer tools.

Add-on compatibility was addressed in Firefox 10, released in January, therefore “all add-ons that were marked compatible for Firefox 4 and higher will automatically exist enabled in Firefox 10 and later,” Nyman wrote.

The new release of Firefox 11, meanwhile, tackled add-on sync. “In 2011, there were 25 billion items synced,” he wrote.

When Firefox 13 makes its debut, Mozilla will incorporate tacit updates, or updates that pass in the background.

“It way that startup and shutdown of the Web browser won’t exist impressed by installation routines,” Nyman wrote. “Additionally, the What’s New page displayed subsequently an update could straightaway be displayed depending if there is important information demanded to exist displayed to the ending user.”

Developer tools, meanwhile, are yet in the works, though more items are available on Mozilla’s roadmap.

Mozilla too predicted a turn of Web platform updates this year, from stand for real time audio, video, and data communication between two Web browsers to a significant performance gain via HTTP pipelining. More details are in the blog post.

Apple’s tablet market-share has dipped but the iPad looks set to continue dominating the segment over the succeeding four years despite the best efforts of Android rivals, according to inquiry house predictions. The iPad held 54.7-percent of the worldwide tablet market-share in Q4 2011, IDC‘s figures suggest, down from 61.5-percent in the late quarter, though those figures disguise the fact that Apple shipped more than 4m units more in Q4. By 2016, meanwhile, the iPad is laid to transport 94.7m units per year, for 48-percent of the overall tablet market

In instant position comes Android, with 44.6-percent market-share in Q4 2011, up from 32.3-percent the previous quarter. Low-cost tablets alike the Kindle Fire, Nook Tablet and slates from Pandigital helped buoy those figures, IDC says, with full Android tablet shipments in 2016 prognosticated for 100.8m units of a total 198.2m worldwide.

Apple had originally set the ship date for March 16. The new iPad goes on sale in stores on a first-come, first-served base on Friday.

Still the folks behind the $5 billion plus business of games and apps that sell in Apple’s App Shop are working overtime to either overhaul their apps or make ones that have advantage of the new iPad’s improved graphics and performance.

Nicholas Callaway of Callaway Digital Arts, which makes animated and interactive books, considers the higher-definition screen of the new iPad as the “IMAX of mobile.”

“Our designers and animators are working daylight and night to optimize our apps,” says Callaway.

He has redesigned two of his near popular apps, featuring Martha Stewart and Sesame Street characters, to accept advantage of the new iPad’s sharper display. The lower-resolution photos and graphics in the apps need to be adjusted, photo by photo, artwork by artwork, he adds. “We’ve created this our highest priority.”

The young iPad starts at $499 and includes crisper Retina display graphics, a faster processing chip, improved HD video camera, and access to faster wireless 4G networks.
